Rest In Fat Beats – 5 Other Things Got Til’ It’s Gone.

Posted in truth. by Jason Mekkam on August 20, 2010

Last Thursday, many within the hip-hop community were in mourning as word spread on the internets that legendary independent music retailer Fat Beats would be closing it’s New York and Los Angeles locations in September.

The news was a pretty mighty blow to lovers of underground hip-hop due to the stores’s significant cultural status as well as it being one of the last remaining outlets for indie acts to get out physical copies of their work to the masses.

While many in response took to Twitter to voice their outrage over the situation and point fingers at folk for not supporting real hip-hop, the sobering reality it’s really not anyone’s fault. As unfortunate as it is, this was inevitable. Times are a changin’. The digital is here to stay making the tangible obsolete. Joining news papers, major video rental chains, and other record stores like Tower Records and Sam Goody, Fat Beats is merely latest victim of shifting currents – a change many hip-hop heads simply refuse to believe in.

In honor of Fat Beats (and channeling the spirit of Janet Jackson and Joni Mitchell) I thought it would be a fitting tribute to take a look at five other things rap fiends have taken for granted/didn’t know what it had until it was gone for good starting with…

5. – Hip-Hop Beef On Wax

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Don’t get me wrong – I love 50’s viral video attacks just as much as the next guy. Too Joe Budden’s Twitter spaz-outs are mad entertaining. But still, I think there is something to be said for MCs actually taking their grievances to the mic. It’s just way more official/less bitch.

Tupac never would have told Bigge he fucked his wife over Ustream.

4. – Rap On TV

Yo! Mtv Raps. Gone.

Hip-Hop The Basement. No more.

Damn you can’t even watch MTV Jamz without being bombarded with work out porn ads.

It’s a sad day when the only time you can hear J. Cole in primetime is during the closing credits of Jersey Shore.

3. – Compact Discs.

Unwrapping the package. Peeping the disc’s art. Opening the credits.

I don’t give a twisted tiger’s titty how nice iTunes has gotten with their Cover Flow. The intimacy of actually owning physical copies of music is something special.

Now I know CDs are completely gone. But best believe were getting there..

2. – The 90’s.

Ready To Die. Reasonable Doubt. The Chronic. Doggystyle. All Eyez On Me. Aquemini. The Low End Theory. Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Illmatic. Do You Want More?!!!??! Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde. The Score. AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted. 93′ Till Infinity. Fear Of A Black Planet. The Slim Shady LP. Resurrection. Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space). The Infamous… Black Star. E. 1999 Eternal. Hard To Earn. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Tical.

Need I say more?

1. – Michael Jackson

The man made Thriller.

“Mr. Chappelle, do you Michael Jackson is guilty of these accusations?”
“Course not man, he made Thriller. Thriller.”
